Handmade in Nepal: What You’ll See and Hear in a Hand-Hammered Copper Bowl
Hand-hammered, hand-engraved, hand-tuned
A smith shapes the metal with thousands of small hammer strikes. Then the emblem is engraved by hand, and the bowl is tuned by ear. That is why pitch and sustain differ slightly from bowl to bowl. In our photos, look for the dimpled hammer marks, the darker patches near the base, and the round knot-style emblem on the outer wall.
A frank note: that emblem is a knot design, not a drawing of the moon. The “full moon” in the name points to the tradition behind the bowl.
Why no two bowls look alike
Hand-worked copper shows its history. You may notice small hammer dimples, fine surface scratches, oxidation spots, and shifts in color. These are normal signs of handwork, not defects. A perfectly even, mirror-bright surface often points to a machine-made bowl.
Here is how to spot real handwork:
- Dimples that are slightly uneven, inside and out.
- A rim that is not perfectly symmetrical.
- A tone that wavers softly as it fades. That is the layered sound you came for.
One caution: some factory bowls get fake hammer marks. Judge by the sound, too, not by looks alone.
The Lunar Rainbow Full Moon Story
Made around the March Worm Moon
According to our artisans, this batch was hammered under the March 2022 full moon. That Worm Moon peaked on March 18, 2022, and was the last full moon of winter. Traditionally it stands for renewal and fresh starts. Many owners strike the bowl to set an intention at the turn of a season.
What a lunar rainbow is
A lunar rainbow, or moonbow, forms when moonlight passes through water droplets. You see it with the moon behind you. It looks silvery white because moonlight is too faint for your eyes to pick up the colors. We love it as a symbol: quiet, rare, and worth stopping for. The bowl itself is not rainbow-colored. Its finish is a deep antique-bronze tone.
The full moon adds meaning. The craftsmanship makes the sound.
How People Use This Singing Bowl for Meditation, Yoga & Sound Baths
- Open or close a session. One strike works like a gentle bell.
- Anchor your breath. Follow the tone until it fades.
- Take a mindful break. The small sizes fit in your palm.
- Layer a sound bath. The 18 and 20 cm bowls fill a room.
- Set an intention or prayer, as singing bowls are traditionally used in Himalayan practice.
How to Play a Singing Bowl (Strike and Rim Technique)
- Set it down gently. Rest the bowl on the cushion or on your flat palm. Do not grip the walls, or the sound will be muffled.
- Strike. Tap the upper outer wall lightly with the wooden striker.
- Sing. Strike once, then draw the striker around the outer rim at a steady, moderate speed. Clockwise or counter-clockwise both work.
- Fix a rattle. A rattle or squeal means you are going too fast or pressing too hard. Slow down and keep the contact even.
Want a different sound? Add a little water, play, then empty and dry the bowl right away. Never soak it.
Choose Your Size: Singing Bowl Size, Weight & Sound Guide
Bigger and heavier bowls generally sound lower and ring longer. Each handmade bowl differs a little, so treat this as a guide.
| Size | Weight | Typical sound | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 cm / 4.72 in | 450 g | Brighter, shorter sustain | Desk, travel, first bowl, gifts |
| 14 cm / 5.51 in | 550 g | Bright to mid | Daily solo meditation |
| 16 cm / 6.3 in | 800 g | Balanced mid tone | Yoga classes, small groups |
| 18 cm / 7.09 in | 900 g | Deeper, longer sustain | Sound baths, rim practice |
| 20 cm / 7.87 in | 1,100 g | Deepest, fullest tone | Group sessions, large rooms |
Not sure? Choose 14 cm for personal practice or 16 cm if you teach.

How to Clean and Care for a Copper Singing Bowl
Copper reacts to moisture, salt, and skin oils. That is why reddish-brown or dark spots can appear. They do not change how the bowl plays.
- Wipe with a soft, damp cloth, then dry it fully.
- Store it somewhere clean and dry.
- Skip cleaners with acid, ethanol, oils, or chlorides. They can corrode the metal.
- Never use steel wool or wire brushes.
- Do not soak it or leave water standing in it. Soaking can cause chipping and discoloration.
- Avoid knocks and drops.
Good to know: a darker patina is natural aging, not damage.
Singing Bowl FAQ
- What is a full moon singing bowl?
- It is a handmade Himalayan bowl that, by artisan tradition, is made around a full moon. The meaning is symbolic. Sound quality comes from the craftsmanship.
- Is this singing bowl really handmade?
- Yes. Look for uneven hammer marks, slight asymmetry, and color variation. Each bowl’s tone differs a little.
- What size should I choose?
- Pick 12–14 cm for a first bowl or travel, 16 cm for yoga classes, and 18–20 cm for sound baths or a deeper tone.
- Why is my copper bowl changing color?
- Copper oxidizes naturally. Wipe and dry it after use. Spots do not affect playability.
- Can I put water in my singing bowl?
- A small amount for play is fine. Empty and dry it right away, and never soak it.
- Do singing bowls really work?
- Many people use them to settle into meditation, and small studies report lower self-rated tension. They are not a medical treatment.
- How long will it last?
- With careful handling, a metal bowl can last for decades. Drops and knocks are the main risk.
