Where to Hang Your Bagua Mirror in 2027
0 commentsNot sure where your bagua mirror goes? Hang it outside, centered above your front door, facing whatever harsh feature points at your entrance, with the Qian trigram on top. A bagua mirror, also called a pa kua mirror, is an octagonal feng shui mirror ringed by the eight trigrams of the I Ching. Practitfioners believe it deflects sha qi, the sharp, fast-moving energy that flows toward a home from roads, corners and poles.
This guide adds what most pages skip: when you can skip the mirror, how the rules change for apartments and windows, and what the 2027 feng shui year (starting 02/04/2027) means for installation. At PotalaStore, we don’t sell bagua mirrors, so nothing here is a sales pitch. Customers ask us about them, and the answers below come from the sources we cite.

Where Should You Hang a Bagua Mirror? The Short Answer
Hang a bagua mirror outside your home, centered on the exterior wall above your main entrance. Face it outward toward the source of harsh energy, with the Qian trigram (three solid lines) at the top. Never hang it indoors, and never aim it at a neighbor’s door or window.
- Confirm the source (5 minutes): Name the sha qi source, such as a T-junction, pole or sharp corner, before you buy.
- Choose the type (5 minutes): Pick a convex, concave or flat mirror to match that source.
- Mark the centerline (2 minutes): Find the exact center of the exterior wall above the main entrance.
- Mount it facing out (10 minutes): Check that the Qian trigram sits at the top before you drill.
- Time it (noon): Hang it between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., when yang energy is believed to peak.
In summary: outdoors, above the door, facing out, Qian on top.

Outside, Centered Above the Main Entrance
The classic spot is the exterior wall directly above your main entrance. Feng shui calls this opening the mouth of chi, the point where energy enters a home. Center the mirror left to right over the door frame. Classical guidance rules out interior walls, so hang it on the outside only.
FengShuiNexus practitioner Victor Cheung still points to the space above the door when headroom is tight.
Which Way Should a Bagua Mirror Face?
Face the mirror away from your home, toward the problem, with the Qian trigram at the top. Qian (☰) is three unbroken lines for Heaven. Kun (☷), three broken lines for Earth, sits at the bottom.
Most placement guides specify the Early Heaven arrangement for protective mirrors. The Later Heaven arrangement appears on other feng shui tools. Check the top before you drill, because an upside-down mirror puts Kun on top. Don’t confuse the mirror with the bagua map, a nine-area grid used to read rooms.
Run a 5-Minute Sha Qi Check Before You Buy
You only need a bagua mirror when something harsh points straight at your entrance. If nothing does, skip it. Tradition treats the mirror as a targeted answer to one sha qi source at a time, so name the source before you buy.
Skipping is a common and perfectly good outcome. Experienced practitioners tend to be cautious here. Rodika Tchi, as relayed by FengShuiNexus, recommends a mirror only on a consultant’s advice. The author of Nine Steps to Feng Shui says that after more than 20 years of practice, no one has seemed comfortable using one. A reader named Laura commented on that post (06/11/2020) that she had hung bagua mirrors for years and took them down right after reading those warnings.
T-Junctions, Sharp Corners and Other Poison Arrows

Feng shui calls these poison arrows: straight, fast lines of energy aimed at your door, like a road that dead-ends at your driveway. Count how many of these five apply to your home:
- T-junction or dead-end street: a road that ends at your door or driveway.
- Sharp corner or roofline: a neighbor’s gable, wall edge or fence corner aimed at your entrance.
- Utility pole or light pole: a pole standing in direct line with your door.
- Imposing building: a much larger structure that looms over your home.
- Institutional neighbor: a hospital or cemetery directly across from your door.
Zero matches means you can skip the mirror. One or more means keep reading.
When a Gentler Cure Makes More Sense
If your arrow is mild, or you share walls with neighbors, a softer cure is believed to do the job without the social risk. Options include a wind chime near the entry, rounded-leaf plants, a sun bagua (a sun-shaped bagua symbol some practitioners use instead of a mirror), or protection jewelry worn on the body. For chime placement, see where to hang feng shui wind chimes near the front door.

Convex, Concave or Flat: Matching the Pa Kua Mirror to the Problem

Pick the mirror by the problem. Use a convex mirror for aggressive sha qi such as a T-junction, a concave mirror for an imposing building, and a flat mirror if you are unsure. The table summarizes each type’s traditional role.
| Mirror | Traditional job | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Convex | Disperses fast, aggressive energy | T-junction, sharp corner, utility pole | Strongest signal to neighbors; use with care in tight subdivisions |
| Concave | Absorbs and shrinks an overbearing structure | Imposing building, looming roofline | Can still feel pointed to the people it faces |
| Flat | Neutral, least confrontational default | Mild or uncertain sources, first-time buyers | Some practitioners say it does nothing |
Size and price. Most guides recommend a mirror at least 5 inches across, so it reads clearly from the street. Retail listings run from 4-inch to 8-inch models, and the Walmart listings we reviewed on 10/08/2026 ranged from about $9.03 to $14.63. For the full story of what a bagua mirror means and how its three types work, read our companion guide.

Convex for Aggressive Sources, Concave for Imposing Ones
A convex mirror bulges outward and is traditionally used to scatter an aggressive source, such as a T-junction aimed at your door. A concave mirror curves inward and is believed to absorb the force of an imposing structure, such as a tower across the street. Think of convex as a shield, concave as a sponge, and flat as a polite “no thanks.” Nine Steps to Feng Shui warns that concave mirrors can still feel pointed to neighbors.
Why Flat Is the Beginner’s Default (and Why Some Disagree)
If you are unsure, most practitioners point beginners to a flat mirror, the least confrontational of the three. FengShuiNexus calls it the most neutral and common choice. FengShuiBalanz argues that a flat mirror cannot reflect or redirect anything, so it does nothing. Practitioners genuinely disagree, and you should know that before you spend money.
Placement by Home Type: Houses, Apartments, Windows and Gates
Where you hang it depends on your home: houses use the front door, apartments face extra limits, and windows or gates work only when they face the source.
| Home type | Where it can go | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Single-family house | Exterior wall above the front door | Standard placement |
| Apartment (door opens to interior hallway) | Above the unit door, inside the building | Gray zone; many practitioners suggest a gentler cure |
| Window facing the source | Above the window, facing out | Works if it faces the source |
| Yard gate or fence | On the gate or fence, facing out | Only if it faces the source and your HOA allows it |
| Garage door | Above the garage door | Skip it unless it is your main entrance |
Hang one mirror per affected direction, and no more than three per home. More than that is believed to create confusion rather than protection. Ordinary mirrors can cause trouble too; see our list of common front door feng shui mistakes like a mirror facing the entry.
Single-Family Homes: The Front Door Rule
For a house, the main entrance wins, even if your family mostly uses the garage, because feng shui treats the front door as the home’s primary opening. Mount the mirror on the exterior wall above that door. If a different door, such as a side entrance, faces the harsh feature, treat that direction as its own case and count it toward your three-mirror limit.
Can You Hang a Bagua Mirror in an Apartment Hallway?
It is a gray zone: classical guides place the mirror outdoors, and an interior hallway is not outdoors. Many practitioners suggest a gentler cure here, such as a sun bagua. Renters should check the lease before drilling, because your landlord’s rules come before feng shui’s. If the hallway door faces a stairwell or elevator, name that as your source before you decide.
Windows, Gates and Garages
If the arrow hits a window instead of the door, hang the mirror above that window, facing out. Ms. Feng Shui says a window mirror can sit inside or outside as long as it faces out, which differs from the outdoors-only rule above. The Qi Flow also accepts exterior walls, fences and balconies. Gates need extra care, since your HOA may restrict them, and a garage door is rarely the right spot.
Hanging Your Bagua Mirror in 2027: Timing and Sectors to Watch
The 2027 feng shui year begins on Li Chun, 02/04/2027, so if you want your mirror up for the new year, hang it before that date. Li Chun also moves the 5 Yellow star into the North sector for the year. Lunar New Year follows on 02/06/2027, and the feng shui year runs until 02/03/2028. For the full view, see the 2027 flying star chart, sector by sector.

Before Li Chun (02/04/2027), at Midday
Feng shui years turn over at Li Chun, not January 1, which in 2027 falls on 02/04/2027. Tradition favors hanging a mirror between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., ideally at noon, when yang energy is believed to peak. Shopping on Black Friday (11/27/2026)? You have until 02/03/2027 to hang it, so there is no rush.
If Your Door Sits in the North or Southwest This Year

In 2027 the 5 Yellow star sits in the North and Tai Sui in the Southwest, two sectors where tradition says to avoid drilling and digging. To find your sector, stand at your front door facing outward and read your phone’s compass.
Here is our reading of that guidance: if your door faces North, finish drilling before Li Chun, or use an adhesive hook that needs no drilling. That is an inference from the flying star advice, not a classical rule, and schools of feng shui differ. We review this section every January and will update it for 2028.
Neighbors, HOAs and Etiquette: Hanging an Octagonal Mirror in America
Never aim a bagua mirror at a neighbor’s door or window. In feng shui that reads as sending trouble their way, and in America it can also start a real-world dispute.
Can a Bagua Mirror Face My Neighbor’s House?
No. Facing a mirror at a neighbor’s home is considered poor etiquette in feng shui and can cause real friction. Before you drill, check your HOA (homeowners association) rules, specifically its CC&Rs (covenants, conditions and restrictions) on exterior decor.
The law has touched this topic once in a notable way. On 11/26/2025, U.S. Magistrate Judge Autumn Spaeth (C.D. Cal.) ruled in Ngo v. City of Westminster that the allegation of a bagua mirror displayed on a wall outside a mayor’s office entrance did not state an Establishment Clause claim. Eugene Volokh reported the decision on 12/30/2025, and an appeal was pending at the time. The case involved a city building, not a private home, so it does not settle any HOA or neighbor dispute. This is not legal advice.

What Do You Do If a Neighbor’s Bagua Mirror Faces Your House?
Start with a friendly conversation, because many people hang these mirrors without knowing the etiquette. Many practitioners say a mirror hung for its owner’s own protection is not aimed at you personally. If it still bothers you, FengShuiNexus suggests placing plants at the window that faces it.
You are not alone in this. A reader named Paul described a neighbor’s convex mirror facing his bedroom in a comment on Nine Steps to Feng Shui (07/09/2019). A calm talk and a plant beat an escalating dispute.
Quick Answers Before You Drill
Classical feng shui says no. A bagua mirror is an outdoor cure, and practitioners believe that indoors it bounces energy around the home instead of deflecting it. Practitioner Ken Lauher notes rare professional exceptions, but says it belongs outside about 98% of the time.
Traditional guidance is one mirror per affected direction, and no more than three per home. More than that is believed to create confusion rather than protection.
Tradition favors midday, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., ideally noon, when yang energy is believed to peak. For 2027, many people aim to hang it before Li Chun on 02/04/2027.
If nothing harsh points at your door, try gentler options: a wind chime near the entry, rounded plants, or a protection piece you wear. Browse the Attract Protection collection for wearable, non-confrontational options.
The bottom line: Hang your bagua mirror outside, above the main entrance, facing the source, with Qian on top, and only if something harsh points at your door. For 2027, aim to finish before Li Chun on 02/04/2027. If a wall-mounted cure feels like too much, a wearable one is a quieter option: black obsidian is traditionally associated with protection, and the Pixiu is a mythical guardian creature linked with fortune. A bracelet sits on your wrist, not your wall, so it points at no one and needs no drilling or HOA approval.
Protection you can carry
PotalaStore’s Black Obsidian Pixiu Bracelet pairs black obsidian with a Pixiu guardian, listed at $43.95 on 10/08/2026.See the Black Obsidian Pixiu Bracelet for everyday protection →
